Fire occurs when there is a chemical reaction between a fuel, oxygen/air and heat. All three must be present for a fire to start. If any one is removed the fire will be extinguished. Fire extinguishers operate in a variety of ways but all extinguishers remove one or more of the elements therefore extinguishing the fire.
